The ACA sets new rules for health insurance, including a requirement that health insurance plans cover specific essential health benefits.

These benefits include ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and new-born care, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drugs, rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive care and chronic disease management, and paediatric services, including oral and vision care Additional information about health.

The ACA also requires insurers to accept all applicants, regardless of their health history or pre-existing conditions. And it limits how much more insurers can charge older adults than younger adults.

Finally, the ACA provides

tax credits to help some people who buy their own health insurance pay for coverage. The tax credit is available if:

  • You buy your own insurance and your income is between $11,770 and $46,680.
  • A family of four with an income between $24,250 and $95,400 may be eligible.
  • You're not eligible for other types of coverage that provide essential health benefits such as job-based insurance or Medicare.
